Our highest priority - Student
Support
Purpose
Financial support for undergraduate and graduate
students at the rate of $1000 per year.
Background
One of graduating seniors last year was disappointed
when he sat through our annual College Awards Ceremony, and learned
of the large number of students in Architecture who receive financial
support through scholarships and awards named after the firms
that supply them, especially when compared to the number of landscape
architecture students who receive the same. Because in landscape
architecture the number was zero. The student took it upon himself
to convince the partners in the firm he joined to rearrange their
charitable contributions to include the University of Florida.
This year we will give a Michael A. Gilkey, Inc. award
to a junior and senior student in our program.
Description
We would like to add a long list of firms to
the awards given each year and an even longer list of students.
We believe this is one of the most direct ways to attract quality
students -- by providing them with some financial support. If
you or your firm is interested in this need, we ask that you consider
a minimum donation of $1000 per year with a pledge to continue
the support for at least five years. If you are in a position
to make a more generous contribution, even better, as we can directly
increase the support given to a student or students.
Target
Twenty pledges of $1000/year for 5 years
Our second priority - Funding
for Recruitment Activities
Purpose
Support for departmental recruiting activities.
Background
It has been years since our Department could
fund a simple straightforward flier that would describe the profession
of landscape architecture in a contemporary and engaging way.
This year EDSA provided the graphic expertise and along with David
Johnston and Associates the funds necessary to print 3500 such
fliers. Approximately 2500 of these fliers were mailed to incoming
UF freshmen who had yet to declare a major. The balance will be
used in recruiting visits to high schools and community colleges.
Description
Among the additional projects we have underway
are:
- Preparation of a slide/power point presentation and script
that will be sent to practitioners around the state to use in
assisting us with recruiting visits high school,
- Publication of a quality newsletter to keep current and potential
friends of the Department informed about the exciting events
in which we are involved, and
- Upgrades to our web-site, which is increasingly our first
point of contact for potential students.
Target
10 pledges of $500/year for 5 years
Also of importance:
$100,000 in Endowed Funds
Purpose
Create a minimum endowment of $150,000 that
will pay $7,500 annually to support scholarships.
Background
Currently we have approximately $65,000 in endowed
funds. When that amount reaches $100,000, the State of Florida
will provide a $50,000 match. The annual rate of return on a fund
of $150,000 will be $7,500.
Description
Secure an additional $35,000 to complete the
$100,000 needed to qualify for a $50,000 match, with the annual
payment dedicated to scholarships.
Target
2 pledges of $17,500
