LAA 6382 – Ecological and Environmental
Policy Seminar

General
Our society attempts to provide environmental protection through
the articulation of public policy codified in the form of laws and
regulations. This course explores the basic ethical, legal, scientific,
and economic principles that underlie environmental policy. Specific
examples of federal, state and local environmental laws and regulations
are examined as a vehicle for understanding the intent and scope
of current environmental policy.
Objectives
To develop a knowledge base in:
History of US environmentalism as a basis for understanding
policy
Review of ecological principles as a basis for policy
Review of economic theories as a basis for policy
Review of legal principles as a basis for policy
An overview of federal environmental policy
An overview of state environmental policy
An overview of local environmental policy
Current topics in environmental policy - principles tested
Peformance
Students are required to read assigned materials prior to each class period.
Evaluation will be based on:
Book report 10%
Current topics paper and presentation 30%
Mid Term examination 30%
Final examination 30%
