Marshall Field Warehouse and Wholesale Store

architects - Henry Hobson Richardson
American Architect. His Marshall field Wolesale Store and Warehouse in Chicago was perhaps the most influential in the development toward a new architecture.

The building has a basic Florentine Palace organization of the facade. There are strong corners and strong base which flares into the site.Simple, basic geometrical form at a distance, but as you approach the building, many smaller scale details keep the building interesting.
Richarson's achievement is in Architectural expression, never in audacity of engineering. Develops strip windows. Uses autumn colors. Respects the limited range of very good materials which he uses.Richarson finds insparation in the Roman aqueduct to develop a unifying motif for many-storied buildings-very important to Louis Sullivan.
